Glendale Unified Bilingual Competency Award
Fact Sheet
January-February 2024
The Glendale Unified Certificate of Bilingual Competency, a silver medal (one language in addition to English) or a gold medal (two or more languages in addition to English), and a special seal on the diploma will be awarded to each graduating student who meets the following criteria:
- Successfully complete all high school graduation requirements in English
AND
- If a student's Primary Language is other than English, they must pass the oral speaking section with a 4.
AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING
- Receive a score of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) exam for world language
OR
- Successfully complete the Glendale Unified District four-year course of study in the same world language receiving a GPA of 3.0 in those world language classes
OR
- Complete the highest course of study in a Glendale Unified School District world language course with a grade of “B” or better
OR
- Pass a foreign government’s approved language exam and receive a diploma/certificate of competency for that (non-English) language from the authorizing government agency. Provide proof to school Teacher Specialists.
OR
- Pass the Scholastic Assessment Test II Foreign Language Examination with a score of 600 or higher. Submit proof of this examination to your site’s Teacher Specialist.
OR
- Pass the Glendale Unified Bilingual Competency Examination (BCE). Glendale Bilingual Competency Examinations are offered in Arabic, Armenian, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Tagalog.
